Godstone race by race Part 2 - races 5-7

Race 5: The Gordon racing PPORA Club Members Four, Five, Six & seven Year Olds Maiden Race for Mares and Fillies – 2m 4f

5 of the 9 entries were declared for the mares maiden which saw Say Grace (Nick Pearce) the 2/5 favourite, with Present Love at 4/1, Young Emma (Peter Bull) 5/1 and Trenley Lawn (D Turner) and Witch Hazel (Georgina Andrews) both at 10/1.

Young Emma was slow away from the start and was very bold and deliberate over the first fence, whilst Trenley Lawn led from Present Love. Present Love jumped across Trenley Lawn at the second fence and gained the lead although the 5 runners were all setting a steady pace. Witch Hazel got in close to fence five but managed to stay on her feet whilst Young Emma had to reach for fence six having taken off on a long stride. Witch Hazel moved up to lead the field at fence seven but the five runners remained tightly grouped together over the next couple of fences with just 3 lengths separating first and last. Present Love blundered at fence nine and Witch Hazel blundered at fence ten loosing places. Young Emma was pulled up at fence twelve where Trenley Lawn made a mistake which allowed Say Grace to move through on the inside to lead for the first time. At fence thirteen Say Grace was quickened up for home and opened up an advantage over her rivals, but Present Love and Trenley Lawn were not going to give up easily and gave chase. Approaching the final fence Say Grace had the advantage and was eased on the run in whilst Present Love and Trenley Lawn battled for second place with Present Love just managing to hold on.

Race 6: The Hazeley Estate Property Management Company Restricted Race

9 went to post for the restricted. The bookies made Iphar (David Maxwell) the 5/2 favourite with Sironi (Marcus Gorman) at 3/1, Victor Victorious at 5/1 and the rest of the field 6/1 and bigger.

The nine runners set off at a cracking pace with Home Chat (Rilly Goschen) taking the lead before a mistake at fence two saw the pair fall, leaving Parzando (Neil Henderson) in the lead. Sironi was the next casualty unseating Marcus Gorman at fence three (the first open ditch). Parzando continued to lead and the pace settled over the next couple of fences. At fence seven Double Measure (Alyce Fisher) was pulled up and at fence eight an error by Clover Bay saw her unseat her jockey. First Partner (Claire Allen) was slow over fence ten and then made a mistake at fence eleven loosing ground in the process before eventually being pulled up at fence thirteen. Iphar moved up to take the lead from Parzando at fence fourteen and was pushed on for home opening up a huge advantage over his remaining four rivals. This lead proved unassailable and Iphar continued to extend his advantage over the final three fences.

Race 7: The Wellingham Southdown & Eridge and Mid Surrey Farmers Draghounds Hunt Members, Subscribers and Farmers Race

4 runners were declared for the last race of the day in which Detling winner Jack’s Present (Nick Pearce) was sent off the 1/3 favourite, with Winters Beau (Philip Hall) and Daretobedifferent (David Evatt) both at 3/1 and Ice And Soda (Cynthia Haydon) the outsider at 8/1.

Ice And Soda was the early leader and had opened up a 4 length advantage at fence three with Jack’s Present just sitting at the back of the field. The four runners all jumped well throughout the first circuit, but passing the horseboxes for the first time, Ice And Soda started to hang to the left and lost a lot of ground on his rivals and was then pulled up at fence seven, leaving Winters Beau at the front with Jack’s Present just behind and Daretobedifferent further back. At fence ten the two leaders started to pick up the pace, Jack’s Present wasn’t very high over fence eleven earning her a slap down the shoulder and allowing Winters Beau to gain a slight advantage. Winters Beau continued to lead over the next two fences with Jack’s Present and Daretobedifferent just behind. At fence fourteen, Jack’s Present was urged on to take the lead taking the inside line towards the final open ditch (fence fifteen). Winters Beau set off after Jack’s Present, whilst Daretobedifferent started to get tailed off. At fence sixteen Jack’s Present started to extend her lead over Winters Beau who had nothing else to offer. With a foot perfect clearance of the final fence, Jack’s Present raced up the run in to provide Nick Pearce with his third win of the day.

1st Jack’s Present Nick Pearce 1/3

2nd Winters Beau Philip Hall 3/1

3rd Daretobedifferent David Evatt 3/1
