The Giles Hopper Memorial Open Maiden Race
Division 1
The first division of the Maiden race saw 9 runners with Kings Rhythm (Phil York) and Star Gift (Philip Hall) start as 5/2 favourites with Mooresini (Tom Cannon) and Round And Round (Steve Spice) both at 3/1, Sidney Charles (Peter Bull) and Lushes Run (L Williams) both at 4/1, Caged Tiger (Heather Kemp) and Good Gordon (Hugh McKenna) both at 6/1 and Jack Moon (J Belbin) the outsider at 12/1.
Jack Moon was slow away from the start whilst Lushes Run took the early lead. Caged Tiger was awkward at the third fence and Star Gift lost places at the fourth with a poor jump. Lushes Run continued to lead till fence six where he was joined at the front by Good Gordon. At the start of the second circuit all 9 were still going well with Sidney Charles making his way through the field, joining Good Gordon for the lead at fence ten. Mooresini had also joined the leading pair at fence twelve where Round And Round pulled up. Lushes Run unseated at fence fourteen. With four fences to jump, five horses were in with a chance of loosing their maiden status. Sidney Charles put in a good jump at the seventeenth fence and started to open up a lead over his rivals. Star Gift was urged to try to catch Sidney Charles and had managed to gain second place at the penultimate fence where Good Gordon blundered. Sidney Charles jumped down the last fence but had enough of an advantage over Star Gift to take the race. Caged Tiger ran on well to take third from Good Gordon.

Division 2
The second division of the maiden again saw 9 runners with Nessa (Phil York) starting as the even money favourite with Castle Banquet (Fred Hutsby) at 5/2. Jacobin (W White) and Podium Pete (Gordon Gallagher) were both at 4/1 whilst Impress (Ben Bentley), Lovely Day (Nigel Benstead), Midleton Madness (Anna Sansom), Phantoms Lair (A Panman) and Trooper Kit (C Wills) were all at 12/1.
Midleton Madness took the early lead whilst Impress was lucky to survive a first fence blunder. Midleton Madness had opened up a 5 length lead over the others by fence four with the others all grouped together. Lovely Day fell at fence five hampering Jacobin. Castle Banquet put in good jumps at fence seven and eight to move through the field and join the leader whilst Impress was starting to get tailed off. Phantoms Lair fell at fence nine and Impress was pulled up at fence ten. Castle Banquet had gained the lead by fence thirteen where Nessa put in a good jump and starting to move up to join the leader. At fence fifteen Nessa had taken the lead and started to move away from his rivals. Midleton Madness and Jacobin both pulled up before fence seventeen whilst Podium Pete and Castle Banquet chased the leader with Trooper Kit continuing further back. Castle Banquet had run his race and pulled up at the penultimate fence, leaving Nessa clear of Podium Pete. Troopers Kit continued to take third place.

The Keenhay Services South East Hunts Club Members Conditions Race
15 runners made their way to the start for the Members race. Highland Chief (Philip Hall) was sent of the 3/1 favourite, with Theatre Knight (Nick Pearce) at 7/2, Myson (Hannah Grissell) at 9/2 and Ballyrainey (Olivia Maylam) and Youlbesolucky (Phil York) both at 5/1. The rest of the field were all priced at 8/1 or bigger.
El Viejo (Tom Cannon) was the leader at the first fence with Magnus Veritas (Stuart Robinson) close behind. The Tailor Carey (Marcus Gorman) hit the second fence and lost places. Theocritus (Heather Kemp) was pulled up before fence four having suffered a fatal injury. New Street Express unseated Paul Blagg at fence six, whilst the lead changed frequently as the field remained closely bunched along the back straight for the first time. Beggars Brook (David Evatt) made a mistake at fence nine and lost places whilst Highland Chief moved to the front of the field. Theatre Knight made up places to get into contention at fence thirteen where Beggars Brook was pulled up. Youlbesolucky hit fence fifteen loosing momentum and Ballyrainey was pulled up, Exodus was also pulled up before fence sixteen. Highland Chief had opened up a lead turning into the home straight with Magnus Veritas, Myson and Theatre Knight all chasing. Myson hit the eighteenth where Ronan The Warrior (Peter Bull) and Dad Says Heazle (Steve Spice) were both pulled up further back in the field. Highland Chief put in a great jump at the last to win the race justifying favouritism. Magnus Veritas finished second with Theatre Knight just taking third from Myson on the run in.

The Ovenden’s Restricted Race
11 horses made their way to the start for the restricted race. Master Alf (Peter Bull) was sent off the 7/4 favourite with Cotton Bay (Marcus Gorman) at 7/2. Pocket Tiger (Fred Hutsby) was at 5/1 with Dizzy Massini (Ben Bentley) and Ilikehimmac (Paul Blagg) both at 8/1 and the rest of the field were 10/1 or bigger.
All eleven runners cleared the first with Master Alf and Parzando (Stuart Robinson) taking the early lead. Charm Lord (Tom Cannon) made a mistake at the third but lost very little ground. Dizzy Massini was slow over fences six and seven where Pocket Tiger was also untidy. Cotton Bay made his way to the front of the field at fence nine whilst Parakeet (I Bostock) was starting to get tailed off. Master Alf had regained the lead at fence thirteen where Dizzy Massini nodded on landing and Parakeet, Pocket Tiger and Doneraile’s Choice were all starting to struggle. Charm Lord made another mistake at fence fourteen and Doneraile’s Choice was pulled up at fence sixteen whilst Master Alf and Cotton Bay battled for the lead. Master Alf had gained a length’s lead at the penultimate fence, and despite jumping down the fence at the last was able to maintain his lead as Cotton Bay made a mistake at the last. Ilikehimmac finished in third and Charm Lord ran on well to take fourth.

The Ladies Open Race
6 horses lined up for the ladies open race. Recent Cottenham winner Big Moment (Clare Douglas) was sent off the 1/3 favourite with Harrycone Lewis (Heather Kemp), Roaringwater (Cynthia Haydon) and Young Collier (Anna Sansom) all at 5/1 and Brendan’s Surprise (Claire Cowe) and Cedar Chief (Lisa Stock) both at 12/1.
The six runners set a reasonably steady pace over the first couple of fences with Brendan’s Surprise taking the early lead, before Young Collier pulled his way to the front at fence three. Big Moment put in a huge jump at fence five and the six runners were all closely grouped together over the next couple of fences. Cedar Chief started to struggle at fence nine after a couple of slow jumps. Roaringwater joined Young Collier for the lead at fence twelve where Big Moment also started to make a move for the front. Big Moment nodded on landing over fence thirteen where Roaringwater put in the best jump. Cedar Chief was pulled up at fence fourteen and Brendan’s Surprise unseated at fence sixteen where Roaringwater was pushed on to open up a lead from Big Moment. Harrycone Lewis was pulled up at fence seventeen where Young Collier fell and Roaringwater had a two to three length advantage over Big Moment. Big Moment nodded on landing over the penultimate fence allowing Roaringwater to extend his advantage. Roaringwater jumped the last well and ran on well up the run in to deny the odds-on favourite. Big Moment was the only other finisher.

The Men’s Open Race
Dante’s Storm (Phil York) was sent off the 4/6 favourite in the seven runner men’s open race with Glenblower Woods (Philip Hall), Lord Atterbury (Stuart Robinson) and Lord Trix (Fred Hutsby) all at 5/1. Daretobedifferent (David Evatt) was at 8/1 and Big Al (J Sarchet) and Some Story (Paul Blagg) were both at 14/1.
Dante’s Storm was slow away from the start giving his rivals a five length lead with Big Al taking the early lead. Dante’s Storm had joined the rest of the runners by fence five but then made a mistake over fence six. Some Story was untidy over fence eight where Daretobedifferent started to loose ground on the others. Big Al got in close to fence ten by which time he had dropped back through field whilst Dante’s Storm had taken the lead with Lord Atterbury and Lord Trix close behind and Glenblower Woods a couple of lengths further back. Daretobedifferent pulled up at fence twelve. Dante’s Storm started to open up a lead over his rivals at fence fifteen whilst Some Story pulled up at fence sixteen. Turning into the home straight Dante’s Storm had an advantage over Lord Atterbury and Lord Trix with Glenblower Woods and Big Al further back. Glenblower Woods and Big Al both pulled up at fence eighteen whilst Dante’s Storm survived a last fence mistake to run on well and take the men’s open with Lord Trix just managing to overhaul Lord Atterbury for second place.

The Horsemart PPORA Club members Condit6ions Race for Novice Riders
A field of seven contested the Novice Riders race. Jack’s Present (Joshua Moore) was sent off the 1/2 favourite with Lord N Master (William Hickman) at 7/2, Heaven Is Above (F Ramsahoye) 8/1, Indoux (Clare Douglas) 10/1 and Moscow Summit (J Park), Raise A McGregor (C Dennington) and Supreme Vintage (Tom Cheesman) all at 12/1.
The seven novice riders set off at a reasonable pace with Indoux taking the early lead. Raise A McGregor had taken the lead at fence five whilst Supreme Vintage made a mistake at the sixth and unseated. Moscow Summit was a couple of lengths back from the rest by fence eight with Raise A McGregor leading from Indoux and Jack’s Present. At the end of the first circuit Raise A McGregor was starting to struggle allowing Jack’s Present to take the lead from Indoux and Raise a McGregor was then pulled up at fence eleven. Lord N Master jumped the fourteenth well to join Jack’s Present and Indoux. Jack’s Present was urged on at the fifteenth and started to open up a lead. Moscow Summit hit the sixteenth when behind whilst Jack’s Present continued to jump well with Lord N Master, Indoux and Heaven Is Above all chasing, however they were all unable to overhaul the lead that had been established by Joshua Moore on Jack’s Present. Lord N Master ran on for second ahead of Indoux who managed to hold off Heaven Is Above on the run in.
