PETE MERCER'S COURSE NOTES

Charing gets the early season meetings in the South East as it is on the south facing side of the chalky North Downs. This means that it drains well and the going would only ever be heavy if the remainder of the county was under a foot of water. The course has a steep uphill side (see above) from by the finish to the top of that stretch. Once the top corner is reached (and many don't, second time of asking) it is then a gradual decline down to the opposite corner. From there to the finish is then pretty level.

Fences are fair and inviting - the only previously tricky one (last of the downhills) having been moved 50 yards back towards the previous one and now only claims the same proportion of fallers as the others. Pete Mercer
